There’s a lot of noise out there when it comes to investing. I get it — In the past I found it not so easy to distinguish the facts from the hearsay
But every now and then something cuts through with a time honoured truth
For me, it was this one simple chart showing how different asset classes
(property, gold, stocks, etc.) have performed over the last century in terms of their price
Nothing fancy. Just raw data clearly laid out (save the below picture and enlarge it to see properly if necessary – it's worth it)
You can zoom in if you would like to see the chart more clearly... but actually its not necessary in order to understand the point I'm getting at
The data shows how the price of these assets has increased with time over 100 years. It also shows how those assets compare to each other
Do you notice how they ALL increase in value with time? Bar none.
Also, take some time to compare how property values (turquoise line) move against global stocks (red + blue lines at the top of the chart) for example – it's clear that stocks outperform WHEN harnessed correctly.
Not financial advice of course - you need know how to pull this off correctly. Not just ANY stock will achieve this, you need to know what you are doing
So what's the message?
Here’s the takeaways:
- Long-term growth is consistent - 100 years of data to back this up
- Inflation is constantly gnawing at the value of your cash - see the purple line at the bottom
- Market crashes REALLY don't matter in the grander scheme of things
- Stocks (especially global ones) tend to outpace other assets when it comes to returns including property and gold (not financial advice of course)
Honestly, it’s the kind of chart I wish I’d seen years earlier. It would’ve saved me a lot of stress and second guessing.
Of course, there's more to it - you can't just buy ANY old stock/fund and expect this to happen. Fund selection is key
